HEALTH SAVINGS ACCOUNT (HSA)
A Health Savings Account is a tax-deferred saving accounts combined with a qualifying high-deductible health care plan. The Health Savings Account is used to pay for qualified medical expenses up until the deductible has been paid. When the deductible has been paid, the insurance company will pay for all, or a percentage, of all covered medical costs. Health Savings Accounts, enables you to take control of your own health care decisions.

What if Medical Expenses are Non-Qualified?
Distributions made for medical expenses that are non-qualified are subject to income tax and a 10% penalty. In case of death, disability or once the individual reaches age 65 the 10% penalty is waived.

Can HSAs be used to pay for anything else?
Medical expenses not covered by the employee's health plan, can be paid for by an HSA. Some of these expenses include dental, vision and over-the counter medications (as long as prescribed by a physician). A copy of all receipts must be kept by the individual for IRS reporting.

What health insurance plans are HSA-eligible?
To be considered HSA-eligible a health insurance plan must meet the following criteria:
The health insurance plan must have an annual deductible of at least $1,100 for individuals and at least $2,200
for families.
The sum of the annual deductible and any other annual out-of-pocket expenses required to be paid under the
insurance plan (other than premiums) not to exceed $5,500 for individuals and $11,000 for families.
